Coronavirus in Spain – light at the end of the tunnel?

As half the world was plunged into unprecedented lockdown, bars, restaurants, hotels and rental properties on the Costa del Sol, along with millions of others around the globe, were forced to close to contain the spread of coronavirus in mid-March.

But is there now light at the end of the tunnel for the tourist industry in Spain?

A local newspaper recently reported that UK online searches for holidays in Spain for 2021 (bearing in mind this is just the UK) were up by a stunning 1,600% - which means the Costa del Sol could see a massive spike in bookings once the airlines are flying again and borders are fully open.

If you are planning to book a luxurious event villa in Marbella for later on this year or for 2021, now is the best time to reserve your holiday accommodation, so that you don’t get crushed in the expected ‘rush.’ It’s also worth remembering that many of the holidaymakers who initially booked for spring this year will now be taking their holidays at later dates, so make sure you enquire early to avoid disappointment.

When will this be? Well none of us are ‘Mystic Meg’ (or we would have seen this coming) but many UK based airlines are hoping to offer flights to Spain’s coastal hotspots again from the middle of June, and with flexible booking conditions offered by most holiday accommodation owners, it is a good idea to enquire about availability before it gets snapped up.

If you are planning a luxurious family villa holiday in Spain or looking to book a Marbella event villa, now is the time to enquire!

Let’s remind ourselves why, when we are free to travel again, Marbella and Spain’s Costa del Sol are the perfect place to shake off the post-virus blues:

  • 325 average days of sunshine each year – think 25 Marbella beaches along 27km of coastline

  • Michelin-starred restaurants, fresh seafood and delicious tapas – best enjoyed al fresco

  • Over 70 of Europe’s best golf courses dotted along the Costa del Sol

  • Dolphin trips, water sports and boat charters in the coastal towns

  • Award-winning nightlife in Marbella and Puerto Banus

  • Quirky streets, restaurants, historical attractions and ‘Orange Square’ in Marbella Old Town

  • Elviria – east of Marbella town, is one of the best destinations to stay on the Costa del Sol

  • Marbella is one of the most popular places in Europe to get married or celebrate your wedding in style – luxury event villas in Marbella are booking up quickly for 2021

  • Pueblos Blancos –some of Andalucia’s most iconic mountain towns and villages, including Ronda and Mijas-Pueblo, are less than a one- hour drive from Marbella

Having lived and worked through several economic and social crises in Spain over many years, one thing is for sure, the Costa del Sol and its incredible tourist industry will rise again and emerge from this, stronger than ever. Stay safe and we look forward to seeing you soon on the other side!
